Nasya Treats Imbalances From The Neck Up
Nasya is the inhalation of medicated oil, herbal powders or smoke. It is used to reduce doshic excesses and imbalances from the mind, sinuses, eyes, ears and throat.
Many times people associate nasya with panchakarma treatments, or use a gentle nasya oil for general sinus health maintenance (to keep sinuses moist during dry times such as fall, or before travel). However, nasya is actually quite a profound therapy with numerous health benefits depending on which type of nasya is used.
Nasya can be used to: enhance memory, restore sleep, increase concentration, expel painful memories, reduce anxiety, reduce TMJ, treat tinnitus, reduce sinusitis, detoxify excess doshas, or rejuvenate.
Most home nasya applications are oil based. The amount and type is based on imbalance.
Nasya benefits all three Doshas and is especially effective for Vata and Kapha disorders. Excess Doshas that have accumulated in the throat, nose, sinus, and head are removed as a result of this therapy, by insulflating substances into the nasal passages. Because the nose is the direct entrance to the brain and to our cognitive functions, the life force of prana enters the body through the nose. Prana controls the vital cerebral, sensory and motor functions of the body.
To Apply Nasya:
It is easiest to apply nasya while doing one’s morning and/or nightly ritual of washing one’s face, and brushing one’s teeth, etc. During this time it is easiest to get the face and sinus area warm and well steamed. However, if you have directions to use nasya at some point during the day when you are away from home it may not always be possible to wash and steam the face. If this is your case, do the best you can.
Wash and clean face with warm to hot water.
For 1-3 minutes massage face with sesame oil. Pay extra attention to the areas above and below your eyes. Use gentle pressure and long circular strokes.
Run hot water out of your faucet so that it begins to steam. Place a towel over your head and hover over your sink. Slowly inhale the steam vapors. This is helping to open your sinuses so that the oil can deeply penetrate the tissues. You can do this in your shower, or you can purchase an ‘inhaler’ from your drugstore. You need only steam the area for 1 or 2 minutes.
Finally, take your dropper and inhale 3-5 drops per nostril. Close one nostril using your index finger, and use quick short inhalations while letting the oil drop into your open nostril.
Once you have used the oil in both nostrils you may gently massage the sinus area.
It is normal to feel some irritation in the sinuses depending on the type of oil you have used. Some may experience an increase of mucus, coughing, and sneezing for several minutes while others will not experience an affect at all. This is normal. If you can, rest for a few minutes after your application it is helpful but not necessary.
