Create A Sacred Space In Your Home For Meditation
One of the most important practices in an ayurvedic lifestyle is looking inward—introspection, meditation, and spiritual practice. We want to understand our true nature and needs. In order to do this independently, we have to nurture a process of inner awareness. Creating sacred spaces within our physical environment can support the consistency of our practice. While we can practice introspection anywhere, beautifying an area in our home for self-study can allure us to return.
We can apply this concept to all our health and healing practices. If we abuse food, we can make food sacred by turning the kitchen into a holy place where eating is a divine ritual. Buying spices whole and crushing or grinding them with a mortar and pestle is one way to connect with the spices we use. Another way is to learn about their medicinal benefits and display them creatively in labeled jars.
Affirm Your Spiritual Experience Through Your Physical Environment
By keeping our meditation area clean and tidy, we remember to take care of and nurture the deeper part of our self that wants to continually expand and grow. When we set something physical within our space and pass by, we are reminded of the commitment we made when we placed it there. When we affirm to develop a practice through a physical construct in our external environment, we also affirm to develop that aspect within our selves.
We can turn our entire living environment into sacred space by writing affirmations and putting them in places to remind us of who we are and what we want. If we cannot commit to a meditation, we can post a sign on the bathroom mirror: “I meditate,” so we always read it when we look at ourself. Herbal baths, essential oils, flowers, altars, comfortable meditation seating, statues of spiritual figures, and pictures of loved ones are all reminders of inner peace and practice.
Your External Impressions Validate What You Believe About Yourself
Ayurveda is a system that approaches every disease (mental or physical) from its root cause. By manipulating our physical environment, we can shift our consciousness and attitude toward life. The impressions that we see on a daily basis, the things we handle, will eventually influence us in deeper levels and support a shift in our habits. It will take time, but the effects will be permanent.
