Cleansing The Body Late Winter & Spring
Ayurveda is lifestyle practice and a medical system that originates from India and is over 5,000 years old. It teaches that there are observable cycles in nature, and that by living in alignment with these cycles we expand our experience of physical health and emotional contentment. Conversely, when we desynchronize from the cycles in nature we foster various disease processes in body and mind.
Cycles In Nature & Ayurveda’s Suggested Lifestyle Practices Include
Live In Alignment With The Sun’s Cycle
Rise just prior to the sunrise, meditate with the sun, eat our largest meal midday when the sun is strongest, do not eat past 8PM, and get appropriate sleep each night.
Live In Alignment With The Moon Cycle
Practice longer periods of introspection during the new moon time, and intentional celebration or outward activity during the full moon time.
Live In Alignment With The Seasonal Cycle
Favor a seasonal harvest and certain cooking methods and spices at different times of the year. Fall is the time of year for building the body. Specifically the immune system through nourishing lifestyle activities that favor a nutrient dense diet that is predominantly cooked with adequate grains, vegetables, and legumes. In spring, we should cleanse the body by favoring diet and foods that stimulate digestive fire, gentle fasting methods, and herbs that detoxify the lymphatic system. In summer, we should favor activity, be physical and consume larger amounts of carbohydrates.
Late Winter & Spring Season Is Upon Us – Impose A Famine
In February in North America, cleanse season is officially upon us. If we were living in alignment with the land, many of us would be conserving our food supplies to make it through the winter winter months around February. Now, most of us have access to ample food all year long, and we inadvertently avoid this intermittent fasting period that has numerous scientifically validated benefits for the body.
This is the time of year we must intentionally induce a famine type of experience, most frequently referred to as fasting.
Intentionally reducing calorie intake has numerous health benefits including:
- Increases metabolic agni (digestive fire) which results in shedding excess weight and maintaining weight for the rest of the year.
- Builds immunity, strength, and resistance to colds, flus, and viruses.
- Balances insulin levels and improves insulin sensitivity.
- Lowers triglyceride levels.
- Strengthens digestion.
